Aggression and sexual behavior in best-selling pornography videos: a content analysis update.

Abstract:
This current study analyzes the content of popular pornographic videos, with the objectives of updating depictions of aggression, degradation, and sexual practices and comparing the study's results to previous content analysis studies. Findings indicate high levels of aggression in pornography in both verbal and physical forms. Of the 304 scenes analyzed, 88.2% contained physical aggression, principally spanking, gagging, and slapping, while 48.7% of scenes contained verbal aggression, primarily name-calling. Perpetrators of aggression were usually male, whereas targets of aggression were overwhelmingly female. Targets most often showed pleasure or responded neutrally to the aggression.
Layden is a psychotherapist at the University of Pennsylvania who treats sexual violence victims, perpetrators, sex addicts and members of the sex industry.
This is a UK Government Home Office report that acknowledges the harm done to young girls by being exposed to over sexualized images at a young age.
Sexualisation of women and girls
"15. Responses to the consultation felt that the sexualisation of popular culture and the ubiquity of sexualised imagery of women and girls constitute a problem with respect to VAWG. (Violence Against Women and Girls) As part of the Government’s VAWG consultation, Dr Linda Papadopoulos has been undertaking an independent review of the sexualisation of young people, looking at the effects of different types of media on young people’s body image, self-esteem and understanding of gender and sexuality. Dr Papadopoulos will publish her findings in January 2010.
“Young men and women are encouraged to see girls as sex symbols and nothing more.
Who cares if we’re successful if we’re not attractive too? Girls suffer from low self-esteem thanks to the bombardment of perfect images they receive from the media,
girls themselves believe that if they are not beautiful they are worthless.”

CONCLUSION: "Performers engaged in risky health behaviors that included highrisk sexual acts that are unprotected, substance abuse, and body enhancement. They are exposed to physical trauma on the film set. Many entered and left the industry with financial insecurity and suffered from mental health problems. Women were more likely than men to be exposed to health risks. Adult film performers, especially women, are exposed to health risks that accumulate over time and that are not limited to sexually transmitted diseases."
CONCLUSION: "Exposure to Internet pornography has potential implications for adolescent sexual relationships, such as number of partners and substance use."
CONCLUSION: "Longitudinal analyses showed that early exposure for males predicted less progressive gender role attitudes, more permissive sexual norms, (and) sexual harassment perpetration."
- 89.8% of the scenes included either verbal or physical aggression.
- 48% contained verbal aggression, mostly name-calling and insults.
- 82.2% contained physical aggression.
- 94.4% of the aggressive acts were targeted at women.
- 70% of pornography's audience is straight males watching alone.
- Pornography is involved in about 70% of sexual abuse cases. Watching pornography may lead to one partner wanting to recreate the on-screen actions & perhaps even film them.
- The content in pornography is getting harsher & harsher. Joe Gallant, of Black Mirror productions, admits that he thinks the future of American porn is violence. Torture-like scenes are already produced. (I.e. Kink.com)
